 A&K Earth Movers

A&K Earth Movers Inc., a general engineering contractor and subcontractor in northern Nevada and the western United States, with 220 employee and annual sales of $55 million, has been in business since 1957.

The original scope of work of A&K was land leveling and agricultural contracting. Kenneth (Kelly) P. Hiatt, who is the founder and one of the original partners, bought out his partner in 1965 and incorporated. Operations were expanded to include governmental and public works, as well as commercial and residential subdivision sitework, underground utilities, and paving.

In 1984, A&K further expanded into aggregate production, and then in 1991, the Company purchased its first Asphalt Hot Plant, adding asphalt production and sales to services provided.

A&K currently specializes in general engineering projects, which include sitework preparation, excavation, underground utilities, pump stations, structural concrete, gravel base and paving; mining leach pads, geothermal sitework and gravel and sand production, as well as asphalt production and sales.

Kelly’s three sons, Mike, K. Bart, and Scott Hiatt have been integral part of the company from childhood. They were voted in as vice presidents of the Company in 1987, being involved in the day-to-day operations. Kelly retired in 2006 and K. Bart Hiatt was voted in as president. He currently serves as president and general manager, Mike Hiatt serves as vice president and field operations manager, and Scott Hiatt serves as vice president and estimating department manager.

Construction Services

A&K Earth Movers have been involved in the geothermal industry for over 30 years. The Company partnered up with Philip Petroleum to create Nevada’s first geothermal plant located at Desert Peak. Through the years we have been involved with dozens of projects with most of the geothermal energy leaders such as Ormat Energy Services, Enel North American, and Magna Energy Corp.

The Company also handles complex jobs for utilities such as the Reno sewer rehabilitation. This project encompasses more than 19,000 lineal feet of gravity sewer replacement and street rehabilitation on some of the busiest streets in Reno, Nev. Using pipe lasers to set the slope and the degree for accuracy in pipe laying, the Company has four mainline pipe crews, and three pipe lateral crews for the project, which includes grading, paving and miscellaneous crews.

Another service the Company provides is site work.  For the Auto Zone Store in Fallon, Nev., they removed the existing parking lot, excavated unsuitable materials, constructed a positive drainage system using Dura Slot Trench drains, and replaced the entire parking lot with new 4,000 pound PCC, including new striping with ADA spaces.

Mining has taken up more than 30,000 man hours per quarter the past year and has been the bulk of A&K Earth Movers business. The Company worked on a custom crushing project for Rawhide, LLC at their Rawhide mine site north of Hawthorne, Nev.

The scope of work included hauling run-of-mine materials from various locations at the mine site to the crushing location. The material was run through a primary crusher and then fed through a secondary crusher further reducing the material. The final product was conveyed to a leach field through a series of conveyor belts and stackers.

The Company also does major paving projects and was awarded the New River Parkway Extension project by the City of Fallon this spring. The scope of work included earthwork and grade preparation, aggregate base, concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk and asphalt and concrete paving. It also included the installation of the sewer line that connected the Dairy Farmers of America Milk Processing Plant to the future lift station as well as several storm drain infiltrators to capture run off.
