On the south-east edge of Kalgoorlie in the barren landscape of Western Australia sits one of the largest open-pit gold mines the world has ever seen.

Fimiston Open Pit, otherwise known as the Super Pit, is a canyon-size mining operation – measuring two miles long, a mile wide and almost 2,000 feet deep -- producing hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold each year.

Originally comprised of a large number of small underground mines, the Super Pit has become a massive open pit mine that can actually be seen from space. Owned and operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Mines Pty Ltd, a 50-50 joint venture with Barrick Gold and Newmont Minng, the Super Pit is the largest open pit mine in Australia and one of the largest in the world.
