Roy Hill, the leading Australian mineral resources company, has received one of the most prestigious awards in the Western Australian mining industry.

Roy Hill has been awarded the 2017 Golden Gecko Certificate of Merit for its environmental excellence in the resources industry.

The award recognised the company’s innovative and best practice approach to utilising mining technology at its flagship Roy Hill Mine, located just south east of Port Hedland.

Roy Hill usitlises a fleet management system, WENCO, to accurately track and trace top soil movements which enables the company to maximise future rehabilitation successes. Roy Hill was commended for its topsoil management, but also the way it handles weds and potentially hostile waste materials.

The Certificate of Merit was accepted by Roy Hill Environment Manager, John Wynne, on behalf of Hancock Prospecting and Roy Hill Executive Chairman, Mrs Gina Rinehart, and Roy Hill Chief Executive Officer, Mr Barry Fitzgerald.

“This award recognises a collective effort to find a solution to manage the segregation of different topsoil types, areas of high weed cover, hostile materials and to record the location and quantity of materials that would benefit future rehabilitation outcomes,” he said.

“This would not have been possible without strong and focused leadership and extensive collaboration with multiple stakeholders.”

Roy Hill CEO, Barry Fitzgerald, echoed those remarks.

“I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish at Roy Hill that can now be adopted by other mining companies with an existing fleet management system at negligible cost to them,” he said.

“From the start of early construction, the requirement to undertake progressive rehabilitation has been integrated into the Roy Hill project work program.

“Using this technology Roy Hill has already completed over 2,500 ha of rehabilitation to date over the Mine, Rail and Port areas.

“We are proud to be an industry leader in sustainable mine site rehabilitation practices, and this award recognises our innovative approach to environmental practices. It underscores our people’s hard work and is a shining example of our core values of Lead, Care, Think, Perform to deliver innovative success.”
