Coal mining has changed quite a bit in the last few years. Not so much in the way it’s mined but in the machinery and scope of operations used. The industry is changing to incorporate bigger equipment and newer technology to produce coal as efficiently and quickly as possible.

The video below follows a team of miners in West Virginia as they expose what everyday life of coal mining is all about.

Coal mining is conducted in two ways – underground mining and surface mining. Once the coal is dug up and removed, it’s broken up and carted to be burned. Coal mining is an energy intensive, labor intensive and money intensive undertaking but the payoff is equivalent to black gold.
